Daniil Medvedevtennisus open First Published: August 31, 2019, 1:49 PM IST New York: Daniil Medvedev said he was working to do “better next time” after his middle-finger gesture angered the crowd during his third round match at the US Open on Friday. The Russian fifth seed received a code violation for angrily snatching the towel from a ballperson, threw his racquet and then covertly raised his middle finger next to his head as he began to walk. The incident was not seen by chair umpire Damien Dumusois but was caught on television and shown on video replay inside Louis Armstrong Stadium.”It was tough. I was in the heat of the moment and started losing the momentum. I don’t really remember but I paid for it the whole match after,” said Medvedev, who was roundly booed by supporters after a fired-up post-match interview.”I want all of you to know, when you sleep tonight, I won because of you. The energy you gave. The more you do this, the more I win,” he said in the wake of a 7-6 (1), 6-4, 7-6 (7), 6-4 win over Feliciano Lopez.Medvedev said he apologized to the Spaniard and his coach after the match, insisting his meltdown was in no way related to his opponent.Asked whether the New York crowd would forgive him after qualifying for the last 16, where he will meet German qualifier Dominik Koepfer, Medvedev replied he wasn’t sure.”What I can say is that I’m working on myself and hopefully I will be better next time,” he said. read more

Rebel forces have withdrawn from Bukavu, a town in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that they seized last week, and sporadic shooting has died down as government troops have re-entered the town, the United Nations Organization Mission in the DRC (MONUC) said today. “MONUC welcomes both the withdrawal of the dissident troops under General Laurent Nkunda and Colonel Jules Mutebutsi from Bukavu and the return of Government forces under General Mbuza Mabe to the same town this Wednesday, 9 June 2004,” the Mission said in a statement. The peacekeeping mission would retain its troops in Bukavu and the surrounding areas and, in conjunction with the South Kivu provincial authorities and the Transitional Government, would assist civilians in need, it said. A UN spokesman in New York said Colonel Mutebutsi and his forces, except for 32 defectors under MONUC guard, had crossed into Rwanda, while General Nkunda’s troops had withdrawn to the DRC town of Goma, north of Bukavu. Civilians who are accompanied to the closed border with Rwanda are admitted and met by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Stephane Dujarric said. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the humanitarian agencies expect both government and rebel forces to facilitate the provision of assistance to some 3.3 million people, a process which was largely suspended during the violence that started on 26 May. read more
Mr. Graff joined outgoing Special Representative Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, and the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Ebola, David Nabarro, on a visit to Freetown, Sierra Leone, during which they were briefed by the National Ebola response Centre (NERC) on efforts to achieve zero transmission. “They were informed that Kambia District was still a transmission epicentre due in part to it neighbouring Forécariah in Guinea, which continues to record a high number of Ebola cases,” the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) reported.UNMEER also reported that efforts were underway to strengthen collaboration with Guinea in different areas, including in sharing information as well as making using of the laboratory in Kambia for Ebola testing of suspected cases in Guinean border towns.Meanwhile, WHO issued its weekly update today, stating that 33 confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) were reported in West Africa in the week that ended on 26 April. Two areas, Forécariah in Guinea and Kambia in Sierra Leone, accounted for 25 or 76 percent of all confirmed cases reported.“In both Guinea and Sierra Leone, the fact that cases continue to be identified after post-mortem testing, together with the fact that around half of all cases arise in people not identified as contacts of previous cases, suggest that surveillance and community engagement still require improvement in some areas,” WHO reported.Liberia reported no confirmed cases for the fifth consecutive week, according to WHO. Of 55 districts in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone that have reported at least one confirmed case of Ebola since the start of the outbreak, 39 have not reported a case for over six weeks. To date, more than 26,000 people have been affected by Ebola in West Africa, including more than 10,000 deaths. read more

Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, who was indicted last August, along with his wife, on five dozen criminal charges, including conspiracy, wire fraud and record falsification, for allegedly misusing campaign funds. Margaret Hunter has since pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with prosecutors. Her husband maintains his innocence.Hunter won a sixth term last November, defeating Democratic candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar with 51.7% of the vote. The path to a seventh term appears more fraught for Hunter, whose trial is slated to begin Sept. 10 in federal court. With rumors of a possible resignation swirling, a cluster of Republican politicians have announced plans to run for the seat in the event Hunter foregoes a run or cannot legally run in 2020.El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, Temecula Mayor Matt Rahn, former Escondido Mayor Sam Abed and former U.S. Navy SEAL Larry Wilske have all joined the race as Republicans. Former Rep. Darrell Issa, who declined a re-election run in the 49th District in 2018, could also join the race.Campa-Najjar, meanwhile, essentially never stopped campaigning after losing last year and is likely to have a war chest prepared for another attempt to flip the seat.“More than half a dozen Republicans are now eyeing a challenge against me for CA-50,” the Campa-Najjar campaign said in a statement last Friday. “This is an internal battle that party elites will have to figure out amongst themselves.”In previous challenges for major office, DeMaio lost to Rep. Scott Peters, D-San Diego, in 2014 and to Bob Filner in the 2012 race for San Diego mayor. DeMaio was also the leader of a failed attempt to repeal the state’s gas tax in 2018.The California primary is scheduled for March 3, 2020. August 5, 2019 KUSI Newsroom read more
The headquarters of the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race in both Alaska and Canada were buzzing Saturday with talk of snow and mushing.Download AudioTwo-time champion Allen Moore plans to return.“We’re gonna do the same that we’ve done every year,” he says. “Hopefully we’ll have a good chance at the end. There’s lots of people that will have a good chance to win, but everything has to line up, as you know.” But Moore can’t run the exact same race he has the last four years. This year, mushers and dogs will see a mandatory 36 hour layover at the race’s midway point in Dawson City reduced by 12 hours. Two hours have been added to another mandatory stop at the checkpoint in Eagle, and teams will take two additional six hour layovers at a checkpoint of their choosing in the first and last third of the race. Moore says the new rules shake up his tried-and-true race strategy. “I’ll probably have to add rest at other places, probably,” he says. “We did set a record pace a couple years ago when we were coming this direction.”But in 2013, race official diverted the trail around American Summit near Eagle. Evenso, Moore says a pace that fast will require rest somewhere, regardless of whether its mandatory or not.So far, 21 mushers have add their names to the roster. read more

Samsung’s 108MP Camera Sensor Is Coming to a Smartphone Near YouHuge Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Doesn’t Have Room For Headphone Jack Stay on target Samsung, expected to unveil its big-screen phablet next week, is teasing consumers with a new Galaxy Note 8 promo video. The 35-second clip invites folks to #DoWhatYouCant, and advertises the Aug. 23 Unpacked event in New York. The ever-mysterious manufacturer makes no direct reference to its Galaxy Note lineup. But the jaunty animation subtly hints at the series’ defining feature: the S-Pen stylus.Watch below as the blue stick flies across the screen, striking out words and pointing to their more ambitious counterparts: “talk” “act,” “update” “innovate,” “closed” “open,” “follow” “lead,” “big” “bigger.”Next week’s invite-only launch event kicks off at 11 a.m. ET in the Big Apple; the ceremony will be live-streamed across the globe on Samsung.com for those with better things to do not in attendance. Here’s to hoping the next-gen smartphone turns out better than its predecessor: Following an autumn 2016 release, the Galaxy Note 7 made headlines when buyers reported the handset spontaneously combusting. Two recalls and a halt in production later, Samsung ultimately blamed the device battery—which, according to teardown experts iFixit, is “very, very similar” to the one glued into this year’s flagship Galaxy S8 and S8+.Samsung in October confirmed work on a Note 8, despite debate over whether it should retire the now-sullied moniker.Early this month, serial leaker Evan Blass tweeted a glimpse of the upcoming Note in “midnight black,” as well as an exclusive photo highlighting what looks like the love child of a late Note 7 and more recent Galaxy S8.Featuring the same wrap-around display and side buttons at the S8, Samsung’s new rectangular Note adds an infinitesimal amount of screen coverage (“bigger” my arse). It also allegedly comes with a revamped dual camera setup—vertical rather than horizontal—and a fresh golden hue.Specifics are still a bit murky, but Blass has tipped a 6.3-inch handset, boasting the same Exynos 8895 and Snapdragon 835 chipsets as the Galaxy S8, plus 6GB of RAM.iFans, meanwhile, can expect a similar iPhone reveal soon; The Verge calculated an early-September event and launch.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. read more
Because writing each pixel is done by inserting liquid in the pores, Intonti et al. could also erase and rewrite the pixels by removing and replacing the liquid, and/or choosing different pores to fill. To help the liquid enter the tiny pores, the scientists coated the pore walls with a thin layer of silicon oxide (a hydrophilic compound). Then, by adding a chemical to the liquid, the scientists could dissolve the silicon oxide, making a pore hydrophobic, and enabling easy removal of the liquid.Using their technology for pores as small as 200-600 nm in diameter, the scientists could create different designs of different colors, such as finely controlled waveguides. “An all optical circuit needs more or less the same elements as an electronic one: e.g. waveguides, filters, amplifiers, switches and so on,” said Intonti. “With this technique, you can realize a large variety of devices: from the simplest—e.g., a point defect can act as a microcavity, or a line defect as a waveguide—to more sophisticated devices like channel drop filters, optical switches, and low threshold lasers. In fact, besides liquids with large refractive indices, with this technique you can infiltrate a local light source—for example, a solution of colloidal quantum dots or liquid crystals in order to externally tune the refractive index.”The scientists also suggest that, beyond optics, the infiltration technique could enable sensor chips by using a liquid that changes its optical properties with exposure to gas or biological species.Citation: Intonti, Francesca, et al. “Rewritable photonic circuits.” Applied Physics Letters 89, 211117 (2006).By Lisa Zyga, Copyright 2006 PhysOrg.com “All-optical devices use light instead of electrons to carry information,” co-author Francesca Intonti explained to PhysOrg.com. “Light has several advantages over electrons. It can travel in a dielectric material at much greater speeds than an electron in a metallic wire. Light can also carry a larger amount of information per second. The bandwidth of dielectric materials is significantly larger than that of metals. Furthermore, photons are not as strongly interacting as electrons, which helps reduce energy losses.”In their study, Intonti et al. turned the pores of photonic crystals into individual photonic circuits by infiltration of a liquid of a specific refractive index. For the past several years, scientists have been exploiting photonic crystals because of the periodic arrangement of the refractive index that causes light to cancel at some frequencies. This structure results in a band gap, or a range of frequencies where light cannot propagate through the crystal. This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. The microinfiltration system enables liquid to enter pores in the photonic crystals in drops of less than 1 femtoliter, or a million billionth of a liter. Infiltration is monitored by a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) mounted on top of a standard microscope. Credit: Intonti, et al. Francesca Intonti and her colleagues created this curved waveguide by filling the pores in photonic crystals with a water solution, which provides a “leak” in the band gap and permits the flow of light. Credit: Intonti et al. By choosing a liquid with a large refractive index, Intonti et al. could introduce a permitted state within the band gap. In their experiment, the scientists used a solution of water and a colored organic dye called Rhodamine 6G (for fluorescence observation). “In photonic crystals, you can introduce a permitted state in the band gap by intentionally introducing a defect in the otherwise perfect crystal,” said Intonti. “Therefore, in order to create a permitted state in the band gap, we physically introduced the Rhodamine solution in a single pore of the crystal: the infiltrated pore acts as a defect that determines the appearance of a permitted state in the band gap.”The amount of liquid in a single photonic crystal pore is only about a thousandth of the volume of a droplet used in ink jet printers. In order to work on this scale, the scientists used a microinfiltration system—originally developed for transferring liquid in biological cells—to obtain a positioning precision of 0.1 micrometers. This microinfiltration system, equipped with a combined optical microscope, enabled the scientists to locally tune the refractive index of the crystals, creating an optical version of an electronic circuit. Using water to “write” light, scientists have designed a photonic circuit inside a photonic crystal that combines several optical elements. As the optical equivalent of an electronic circuit, this design marks another step on the path to realizing all-optical devices for communication and IT applications.
