Spokesman Jan Fischer told a press briefing at UN Headquarters in New York that the debate, which traditionally attracts national leaders from across the world, would take place from 10 to 16 November. “The general debate will be held for a seven-day period, going from Saturday to Friday, so there will be meetings on Saturday and Sunday,” Mr. Fischer said. The morning sessions will start at 9 a.m. and run through 1 p.m., while the afternoon meetings will start at 3 p.m. and last until 7 p.m. The general debate was initially scheduled to begin on 24 September, but the Assembly decided to put it off following the attack that destroyed the World Trade Center in New York City. Addressing the 189-nation body on Monday, the Mayor of New York City, Rudolph Giuliani, thanked the Assembly for the consideration it had shown the City in postponing the debate. “Our City is now open, and any time we can arrange it, we look forward to having your heads of state and your foreign ministers here for that session,” he said. read more
Marlboro maker Altria’s 1Q profit falls on lower cigarette sales, year-ago comparison AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email RICHMOND, Va. – Altria Group Inc.’s first-quarter profit dropped 15 per cent as the Marlboro maker sold fewer cigarettes and its year-ago results benefited from lower expenses from a longstanding legal settlement. The owner of the nation’s biggest cigarette maker, Philip Morris USA, said Thursday that its cigarette shipments fell 2.5 per cent to 29 billion cigarettes during the quarter. Adjusting for trade inventory changes, cigarette volumes fell 3.5 per cent, compared with the total industry decline of about 4 per cent.Volumes of its premium Marlboro brand fell more than 2 per cent but its share of the retail U.S. market rose 0.2 percentage points to 43.8 per cent. The company’s share of the U.S. retail market rose 0.2 percentage points to 50.7 per cent. The Marlboro brand has been under pressure from competitors and lower-priced cigarette brands amid economic uncertainty and high unemployment. The brand sold for an average of $5.91 per pack during the first quarter, compared with an average of $4.43 per pack for the cheapest brand. The increased competition is on top of the tax hikes, smoking bans and a social stigma that have made the cigarette business tougher.Altria and others are focusing on cigarette alternatives — such as electronic cigarettes, cigars, snuff and chewing tobacco — for future sales growth because the decline in cigarette smoking is expected to continue.Adjusted volumes for its smokeless tobacco brands such as Copenhagen and Skoal grew about 6 per cent. Volumes for its Black & Mild cigars rose less than a per cent.Altria also owns a wine business, holds a voting stake in brewer SABMiller, and has a financial servicesThe company posted earnings of $1.17 billion, or 59 cents per share for the period ended March 31. That’s down from $1.38 billion, or 69 cents a share, in the year-ago period when it recorded more credits for disputed payments under the 1998 multistate tobacco settlement.Excluding one-time items, earnings were 57 cents per share, matching Wall Street expectations.Altria, based in Richmond, Va., said that revenue, excluding excise taxes, increased less than a per cent to $4.01 billion as higher prices helped offset a decline in volumes. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $4.03 billion. Its shares edged up 12 cents to $38.43 in midday trading Thursday. Its shares are up just over 8 per cent for the past year.___Michael Felberbaum can be reached at http://www.twitter.com/MLFelberbaum . A mobile phone app to protect lone workers on the job is gaining traction in Australia. Co-founders Greg Lindner and Adam Whittaker started the WorkSafe Guardian Smartphone app in 2015 and have signed up more than 100 companies with a user base heading into the thousands. The South Australian company already monitors the safety of workers in New Zealand and is looking for more global opportunities.WorkSafe Guardian lets employers and workers manage many common workplace risks through a mobile device. Lone workers set a timer on the app when they enter a workplace situation where they are alone or there are risks involved. If the timer expires and the employee hasn’t checked-in, an alert with GPS coordinates or a pre-set location is sent to a monitoring centre.A recurring timer can also be set to remind employees to check-in on a regular basis. The app also has a function that enables an employee to set off an alert simply by shaking the phone.Lindner said the app was suited to workers operating in remote areas such as mines or renewable energy sites. “We’re finding the demand is mainly coming from larger companies and government organisations,” he said. The app only tracks an employee’s location when the app is enabled, easing potential privacy concerns among users.Headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, WorkSafe Guardian works with each client to tailor response procedures, rather than defaulting to local police.“The reason we are starting to get good penetration now into different markets is the users are totally comfortable that we can’t tell a manager where they are at any one time – it’s not always on, it’s only when they need it,” Lindner said.“But if they’re travelling interstate and are walking back to their hotel after dinner there’s no reason they can’t use it then and we’ve got others who go for a jog after work at night and they’ll use it – we’re 24/7 as they need it.”The first response when the app is triggered is to call the phone in case it is a false alarm. If not, then the client’s response procedure is activated.“Each client is different. If it’s regional we may use a local security company rather than police in the first instance,” Lindner said.“It’s come from our over 20 years in the security industry and knowing that not every situation is picture perfect.”Clients pay a monthly fee per user for the app, which is available for Apple and Android devices.Lindner said he has been in talks with companies with staff in the USA and Europe, which could mean the app could continue to be monitored from Australia or an international company could buy rights to the app and run the monitoring itself.“The whole thing was designed that if the opportunity came for us to take it overseas then we could, it also came out that there are a lot of overseas companies with workers in Australia just as there are Australian companies with workers overseas,” he said.“The scalability of it means it can still be monitored in Australia for the rest of the world or other parts of the world can monitor their own – it’s very flexible in its design.” read more

He is the second Irishman to lead the Lions on tour after Paul O’Connell captained the team in Saturday’s 59-8 pasting of the Barbarians in Hong Kong.O’Driscoll is partnered in midfield by Leicester Tigers’ Manu Tuilagi with Tommy Bowe on the right wing and George North on the left. Wales’ Leigh Halfpenny has been given the 15 jersey but neither Rob Kearney or Stuart Hogg are named on the bench. Ben Youngs [scrumhalf], Sean Maitland [wings, fullback] and Owen Farrell [outhalf, centre] will be asked to cover the backline.Gatland revealed that Kearney had a grade one hamstring tear and is likely to miss Saturday’s game against Queensland Reds. The fullback’s fitness is a “concern” for the coaching staff. There is an Irish pairing in the half-backs as Jonathan Sexton starts alongside scrumhalf Conor Murray. (©INPHO/Dan Sheridan)Sean O’Brien has recovered significantly enough from his knee knock to start at openside, with Tom Croft of Leicester at blindside and Jamie Heaslip at No. 8. Tour captain Sam Warburton is hoping to be fit to start in the back row for the upcoming match with the Reds. Gatland said:There were a lot of positives to come out of the first match in Hong Kong. Our fitness and application were excellent and we operated well in the set pieces. That said, it was our first match and naturally we were a bit rusty, and there is definitely room for improvement.“”f course this is a completely new team and the challenge is to ensure that the selected players continue the on-field progress we are seeking. With Brian at the helm you can be sure they will be ready to emulate the victory against the Barbarians. This is his fourth Lions tour and he is a respected leader.” read more

Rolls-Royce has become the latest industry giant to back the Remain campaign, after urging its employees to vote to stay in the European Union at next weeks referendum.Warren East, the engineering giants chief executive, warned that leaving the 28-country bloc would give Rolls-Royces American rivals a head start in the market, adding a £65m ($92.1m, €82.2m) investment plan could be put at risk.It is like we are running a multi-lap race and with each lap we are giving the competitors a 10-yard head start, he said.East stressed that GE and Pratt and Whitney, its main US-based competitors, would not suffer from a pause in investment, which he fears would instead weigh on UK firms following a Brexit. Its all about uncertainty and our position in Europe, he told Dominic OConnell on BBCs Today Programme. We have a very interconnected operation around Europe […] Were making investment decisions all the time about where to place various parts of our operation […] and uncertainty created by Brexit puts a lot of those decisions on hold, and that pause is something that our US competitors dont have to cope with.Britains main engineering company, which accounts for £1 in every £50 of British exports, Rolls-Royce has a very strong relationship with Europe, where it employs 37,000 people – three quarters of its total workforce. The group, which has significant presence in Derby, Germany, the US and Singapore, is in the middle of an expansion plan aimed at doubling the number of aero engines produced each year from the current 400.Rolls-Royces message comes only a few days after telecoms giant BT threw its weight behind the Remain campaign, indicating it wanted Britain to remain within a reformed EU. read more
Kohli and Sir Viv in conversationBCCI.tvIn a special chat organised by the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) between all-time great West Indian batsman Sir Vivian Richards and Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli, the two men engaged in a very insightful and enlightening conversation about batting and cricket in general.BCCI uploaded the second part of the interview on its website and it featured some very interesting comments and observations from both men. Virat mentioned one of the most difficult phases of his career – the 2014 tour to England and how he got over that slump in form.In the five-match Test series that India played on that tour against the hosts, Virat wasn’t able to get a single half-century in 10 innings. However, the now-legendary Indian batsman was able to recover his form and plunder nearly 700 runs on his next tour – to Australia at the end of the year.Talking about that experience, Kohli said to Sir Viv: “In 2014, we went to England and I had a very, very bad tour. But the next one was Australia which is even more hostile and even more tough. So, the thing that helped me that time, and again it happened naturally, was visualization.”Three months before going to Australia, I started visualizing that I am taking these bowlers on and I am gonna dominate and I am gonna come out on top. That for me was a revelation. I had so much belief because of putting that thought in my mind.”?Part of 2 of the special chat with @ivivianrichards and @imVkohli is out! Playing in Australia brought the best out of them. Find out how they relished the challenge of taking on some of the best bowlers in the world. ?Full interview ? – https://t.co/1ystv9lmpa pic.twitter.com/4TraXddaTK— BCCI (@BCCI) August 23, 2019 Sir Viv interjected at that moment and praised Virat for his efforts on that tour. He also talked about how Australians have a penchant for sledging and expressed his admiration for the way Virat responded to them.”I was in Australia at that time. I can remember, we were doing the Big Bash. The Australians can be, in my opinion, at times, bullies. They try talking you out but you gave it back. I loved that. Not just giving it back but giving it back with interest,” the former Windies skipper said.He further added that: “I always felt that if you could go to Australia and combat what they have there, you are gonna be OK elsewhere.”Virat reciprocated the adulation of Richards. “For me, there was nobody more significant than yourself in that regard. The time that you played and the way you dominated the bowlers, I can relate to the fact that only self-belief can make you play in that manner where you feel like you will not be beaten by anyone and you will come out on top,” Virat told the great man sitting next to him. read more
Snipaste efficient screenshot tool with extras by Martin Brinkmann on October 16, 2016 in Software – 14 commentsSnipaste is a free portable screenshot taking tool for Microsoft Windows devices — Linux and Mac versions coming — that is easy to use and ships with extra functionality that you may find useful. There are numerous free and paid screenshot programs out there for Windows, and it is usually difficult to convince users to try a new program once they have set their mind on using a particular program. On the free side, there are excellent programs such as Greenshot or ShareX, options to take shots right from Firefox’s Developer Toolbar, or paid programs like SnagIt.SnipasteSnipaste falls into the free screenshot taking tools group. Windows users can download a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the program for their devices — there is a version for XP as well — and run it right after extraction from that location.Like most screenshot taking tools, it sits quietly in the background waiting for input. You may control the program directly through the system tray icon or by using keyboard shortcuts.Snipaste does not use the usual keyboard shortcuts — using the Print-key on the keyboard — to power its screenshot taking functionality. Instead, it mapped the functionality on the F1 key.A tap on F1, or a click on the program’s icon opens selection mode. Move the mouse around and Snipaste will select windows or areas on the screen automatically as a suggestion. This is not a new concept as many programs in the vertical support this, but it is welcome as it makes things easier more often than not.You can still draw a custom sized rectangle around an area on the screen though so that is covered by the program as well. The program displays a magnifier by default which magnifies what is underneath the mouse cursor so that it is easier to fine tune the borders of the screenshot. There is also a color picker tool included which shows the color underneath the mouse cursor and lets you copy it to the clipboard with a tap on the “c” key on the keyboard.Once you make a selection editing tools are displayed directly on the screen. You can move the screenshot, or use one of the available tools instead. Tools include what most users require such as an option to draw an arrow, add text, erase or blur, highlight, or draw rectangles around certain parts of the screenshot. A tap on the save icon opens the file browser that you use to save it.The display of the editing options on the desktop make the operation a bit quicker than with the majority of comparable tools. SnagIt for instance loads the image in an editor where it can be edited afterwards. While that is handy already, it is only part of the application’s capabilities. Since it is called Snipaste, you’d probably assumed already that it supports pasting functionality as well.Pasting works a little bit different than the default Windows operation. Instead of pasting the contents of the clipboard on the active window, Snipaste displays a previously copied image on the screen. Think of it as a preview of the image on the screen that you can interact with. It supports multiple sources including images, plain text, HTML and various others. You may zoom in and out, rotate, set transparency or use other controls to interact with that image. A right-click displays options to save the image, or to destroy it again. There is also a grouping feature available that enables you to display multiple items at the same time on the screen.Snipaste preferencesThe program’s preferences are quite extensive. You may use them to change snipping and pasting behavior, and to configure appearance functionality. There is a lot to configure there, with hotkeys probably being one of the interesting options. First, the tab displays all available hotkeys so that you know what is supported and what is not. While you can only change some, the global hotkeys such as snipping and pasting functionality, there is whole bunch of internal hotkeys that you cannot change but make use of.Closing WordsSnipaste is an efficient portable screenshot taking tool for Microsoft Windows devices that offers excellent functionality. The program supports multi-monitor setups and HiDPI displays on top of what has been mentioned already. The application uses roughly the same amount of memory that SnagIt uses on the system.Summary12345 Author Rating3.5 based on 9 votes Software Name SnipasteOperating System WindowsSoftware Category MultimediaLanding Page https://www.snipaste.com/ Advertisement read more
