Fed chairman Ben Bernanke delivers a keynote speech Friday while European Central Bank president Mario Draghi speaks on Saturday.Expectations for more stimulus grew after the Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Bernanke had written a Republican lawmaker saying there was room for the central bank to do more to help the recovery.Hopes for central bank stimulus have supported gains this month after Draghi said Aug. 2 that the ECB was prepared to do whatever was necessary to keep the euro currency union intact.“What’s driving markets is this whole hope for stimulus, because really there’s been nothing but a spate of OK news, but not great news,” said John Stephenson, portfolio manager at First Asset Funds Inc., adding there will be disappointment if central bankers don’t deliver.“If you think people have run the market up in the hope of stimulus, you’re going to be hoping they don’t disappoint otherwise you could see a relatively unpleasant selloff occur.”There were also hopes that the Chinese government is ready to boost the world’s second-biggest economy after Premier Wen Jiabao called for efforts to stabilize weakening exports. The report from the official Xinhua news agency gave no indication of possible measures but Beijing previously has promised tax cuts and loans by state banks to help struggling exporters.Export growth in July fell to just 1%, well below forecasts, from the previous month’s 11.3% growth due to weak demand in debt-crippled Europe, China’s biggest export market, and the United States, which is struggling with a sluggish recovery. On the TSX, the base metals sector was down almost 1% as September copper shed an early advance to close down one cent at US$3.48 a pound. AP sources: 476,000 applications filed for Obamacare; officials won’t give enrolment figures WASHINGTON – Administration officials say about 476,000 health insurance applications have been filed through federal and state exchanges, the most detailed measure yet of the problem-plagued rollout of President Barack Obama’s signature legislation. However, the officials continue to refuse to say how many people have actually enrolled in the insurance markets. Without enrolment figures, it’s unclear whether the program is on track to reach the 7 million people projecting by the Congressional Budget Office to gain coverage during the six-month sign-up period.Obama’s advisers say the president has been frustrated by the flawed rollout. During one of his daily health care briefings last week, he told advisers assembled in the Oval Office that the administration had to own up to the fact that there were no excuses for not having the website ready to operate as promised. The president is expected to address the problems on Monday during a health care event at the White House. Cabinet members and other top administration officials will also be travelling around the country in the coming weeks to encourage sign-ups in areas with the highest population of uninsured people. The first three weeks of sign-ups have been marred by a cascade of computer problems, which the administration says it is working around the clock to correct. The rough rollout has been a glaring embarrassment for Obama, who invested significant time and political capital in getting the law passed during his first term. The officials said technology experts from inside and outside the government are set to work on the glitches, though they did not say how many workers were being added.Officials did say staffing has been increased at call centres by about 50 per cent. As problems persist on the federally run website, the administration is encouraging more people to sign up for insurance over the phone. The officials did not want to be cited by name and would not discuss the health insurance rollout unless they were granted anonymity.Despite the widespread problems, the Obama administration has yet to fully explain what went wrong with the online system consumers were supposed to use to sign up for coverage.Initially, administration officials blamed a high volume of interest for the frozen screens that many people encountered. Since then, the administration has also acknowledged unspecified problems with software and some elements of the system’s design.Interest in the insurance markets appears to continue to be high. Officials said about 19 million people had visited HealthCare.gov as of Friday night.People seeking insurance must fill out applications before selecting specific plans. The applications include personal information, including income figures that are used to calculate any subsidies the applicant may qualify for.More than one person can be included on an application.Of the 476,000 applications that have been started, just over half have been from the 36 states where the federal government is taking the lead in running the markets. The rest of the applications have come from the 14 states running their own markets, along with Washington, D.C.The White House says it plans to release the first enrolment totals from both the federal and state-run markets in mid-November.An internal memo obtained by The Associated Press showed that the administration projected nearly a half-million people would enrol for the insurance markets during the first month.Officials say they expect enrollments to be heavier toward the end of the six-month sign-up window. In an ironic twist, the problems with the rollout were overshadowed by Republican efforts to get changes to the health care law in exchange for funding the government. That effort failed and the government reopened last week with the health care law intact.Stung by that defeat, some Republicans are now calling for the resignation of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The White House says it has complete confidence in her.House Republicans have scheduled a hearing next week to look into the rollout problems. White House allies say they’re confident the problems are being addressed.“There’s no question the marketplace website needs some improvement,” said Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., one of the architects of the law. “The administration needs to fix the computer bugs and I’m confident that they’re working around the clock to fix the problems.”___Associated Press writer Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar contributed to this report.___Follow Julie Pace at http://twitter.com/jpaceDC AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email by Julie Pace, The Associated Press Posted Oct 19, 2013 4:52 pm MDT read more

I was very lucky to have a fairly calm baby, that I used to take to my clients’ offices – Dominique AntarakisWith the internet filled with hilarious misspellings and unfortunate typos, having the help of a cluey wordsmith is an invaluable commodity these days. Enter Dominique Antarakis of the Copy Collective. Starting the small copywriting business in 2008, she’s managed to take lifeless, boring text and turn it into marketable, snappy prose for anyone who needs it. The business basically works as a buy your own writer. Need a speech in a day? No worries. Annual report due in a week? Done and done. Never created a brochure before? Not a problem. It’s a company you can hire to write or edit your business’s text. It offers professional writing for clients who need that extra pair of eyes before they press send or don’t have time to produce the writing themselves; a final buffer before a typo reaches a client and, if unfortunate enough, the internet. Dominique wouldn’t call the company an overnight success, but since its inception in mid-2008, the company has grown to hold five permanent staff members, a Sydney and New Zealand branch and a contributor base of more than 60 people around the country. As a former business journalist and copywriter, the idea to start her own business was always in the back of her mind, but it took a bit of a push to get her to start looking at it seriously. Reporting on success stories and business failures gave her a good idea of what she would be getting herself into. “My first beat was women in business, so I got to interview a lot of interesting people about their lives and work, and I remember thinking at the time that I would really like to own and run a business one day,” she tells Neos Kosmos. “But as a writer it’s hard to see how that could happen.” The business actually came out of necessity when her circumstances changed. As a new mum, Dominique wasn’t keen to go back into full time work with a young bub to look after, so she reassessed her job prospects. She swapped the 9-5 for contributor work she could do in her own time. “9-5 just never worked for me, I always had trouble getting to work on time,” she says with a bit of a laugh. “It was ideal for me to be a freelancer.” The baby actually helped her bridge the awkward first meeting with clients. “I was very lucky to have a fairly calm baby, that I used to take to my clients’ offices,” she remembers. As her client base grew, her reputation grew too, and soon enough she was struggling to manage her workload by herself. “Basically I was doing five or six or seven jobs at the one time, and I thought ‘this is ridiculous’,” she says. “If I had other people on board to pick up the slack, jobs would actually be done a bit more thoroughly and I could actually charge more for the hours being spent on them.” From there the idea was born and she was on her way to starting a business. After covering so many horror stories in her time as a business journalist, she knew how difficult it would be sustaining a business past the five year point. She took the initiative and booked herself in for a six-month business mentoring course at the Australian Businesswomen’s Network and studied hard to avoid the problems so many small businesses fail to anticipate. “The biggest concern I had was quality control,” she says when she first started looking to hire new contributors. “You become a bit of a control freak when it’s all your own work, you think, ‘will I find people who are as committed to this as I am?’” The panic eased when she kept finding talented writers, some, she says modestly, with a better turn of phrase than her. The whole business operates online via cloud computing, so contributors can be anywhere with an internet connection and able to work. It’s something she says is intrinsic to a freelancer, being able to keep a work life balance. As well as keeping contributors busy, the Copy Collective also looks to enhance its writers’ skills and offers them training to help them learn how to write for other mediums. The training sessions are also open to the public for any budding writers hoping to boost their skills. The next session is ‘Writing for Fundraising’ starting from February 18. On the books, Dominique has high profile clients such as Amnesty International, The Cancer Council, Canteen, Médecins San Frontières and TEDxSydney, who all use the Collective for different reasons. Many use the Collective’s templates for letter writing, press releases or brochures and others ask for whole fundraising campaigns. The not-for-profit industry is where Dominique started as a freelancer, and she takes a lot of pride in keeping as many organisations on the books as she can. At the moment, charity groups make up 50 per cent of the Collective’s client base. For many of these groups, the Collective is writing the lion’s share of their marketing and media campaigns, effectively becoming a PR firm in the process. It’s something the Collective is looking to move into if there’s more demand. Another venture on the horizon will be offering translation services. Many clients have already been asking for their work to be translated and the company has been dipping its toe in the water. “People have approached us and we’ve said we can do that,” she says. “That will be in the next year or so. The model works if the work is there.” Until all the ‘i’s are dotted and all the ‘t’s are crossed, there’s no stopping the Copy Collective. Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram read more
There are many debates in the gaming industry, including which game console is the best or if PC gaming is better than all other options. A recent survey revealed interesting gaming platform preferences across the U.S., and Xbox was gamers’ favorite choice out of Nintendo, PlayStation, and PC gaming in many states. In February, PCMag.com surveyed 2,033 U.S. consumers on a variety of topics, including gaming preferences, and collected additional demographic data on respondents’ home states. PCMag.com asked respondents who identified as gamers to share their favorite gaming method between the top three console-makers (Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox), or if they preferred PC games. Thirty-one percent chose Xbox, 28 percent favored PlayStation, 21 percent preferred Nintendo, and 20 percent said they were mainly PC gamers.<span data-mce-type=”bookmark” style=”display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;” class=”mce_SELRES_start”>A state-by-state breakdown of these gaming platform preferences generated interesting results: Twenty-seven states had more respondents who selected Microsoft’s Xbox One and Xbox One X as their favorite console. Following Xbox, Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo consoles, including the Nintendo Switch, each earned the top ranking in 10 states. Even though the top three console-makers were more popular across the nation, PC gaming was the most preferred gaming method in three states: Montana, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. Some states had close results: Nintendo topped PlayStation by less than one percent in Utah, beat Xbox by less than one percent in Indiana, and bested PC gaming by less than one percent in Iowa. Additionally, PlayStation beat Nintendo by one percentage point in Arizona, while Xbox topped PlayStation by two percent in California.Even though PC gaming didn’t make it to the top in some states, a deeper dive on PC gaming revealed that 75 percent of respondents who favored PC gaming had Windows-running computers, including computers that run on Windows OSes. PC gamers also preferred desktops over laptops: Thirty-two percent of PC gamers said they use a desktop as their main computing device.Gaming method preferences also varied across key demographics: Women favored Nintendo and Xbox, even though they were more likely to not identify as gamers or not have a preferred console, while men favored PC gaming and PlayStation. and you can’t say you don’t" said Delmar Bennett of Sulphur La "But when the $20 billion comes to this area you want to make sure that you can at least be comfortable with the air that you breathe and the water that you drink" "Your 1200 jobs are not worth our children grandchildren future children" said Dawn Kelly of Lake Charles "Diseases that have no cures Cancers that have no cures It’s not worth it" It was an unexpectedly large turnout said Michael Tritico an environmental activist based in Longville Louisiana north of Lake Charles "That was gratifying" he said "There I was sitting there thinking My goodness this room is filled and overfilled and at the last hearing they had me and that was it" Still Tritico is a realist On a daylong boat trip down the Calcasieu River last June the 71-year-old biologist spoke of the futility of being an environmentalist in an industry-loving state "I think what we do is symbolic" Tritico said as the boat entered Clooney Island Loop a bend in the river and site of a vast spill of ethylene dichloride a chemical linked to kidney liver and heart disease from Condea Vista and ConocoPhillips in the 1990s "We have done our absolute best and its made no difference" Tritico is old enough to have belonged to the Calcasieu Rod and Gun Club a long-defunct group of hunters and fishermen who objected to the industrial pollution that began to appear in the 1930s "They stood up and said You cant do this Youre ruining what we live for They were told to shut up: We need the jobs Youre in the way of progress" Tritico is still railing knowing that people like him are branded "radicals crazies whatever" In his written comments on the Sasol permit he questioned the "no significant impacts" finding by the LDEQ "If a project with unprecedented amounts of air and water emissions is declared to be so benign" he wrote "what is the point of having any regulatory framework" Mike Thomas Sasols vice president of US operations reminded the audience at the March hearing that "more than 400 Sasol employees and their families including me and my family call Southwest Louisiana home and have a personal vested interest in the environmental conditions and quality of living in our area" In its statement to the Center Sasol said that its permits "underwent the most rigorous review possible" by the LDEQ and the EPA The two agencies it said had a "sharp focus on both greenhouse gases and on criteria pollutants and were extremely thorough in their evaluations" The states Johnston said there were "certain things LDEQ has control over and things LDEQ doesnt have control over Site location the Sasol buyout program the willingness of Mossville residents to move thats not under the purview or regulation of LDEQ" McCabe said she wasnt familiar with Mossville but that in general the EPA works with states to issue air permits that meet federal guidelines "The reason why activities like this go through the air permitting process is to establish that emissions from a plant are not going to create a health threat in the community" she said "There are areas in this country where there are concentrations of industrial activities and thats one reason why those permitting processes are so important" The core problem lawyer Harden said is that the permits arent crafted with neighbors well-being in mind She pointed to the historically African-American communities of Morrisonville and Reveilletown which have been lost to industrial expansion in Louisiana She also pointed to Bayou Corne portions of which have been swallowed by a sinkhole caused by a salt dome that collapsed while being mined by a Texas company "Theres an inherent danger in our permitting process for communities like Mossville and so many others" Harden said "Thats the reason why these facilities go to places like Mossville Its because the permits dont protect people So you go to places where people socially economically and politically are also without protection" She urged regulators to consider federal and state environmental laws in harmony with international human rights treaties with which the US has agreed to abide Until that happens she said "Its sort of like an outlaw situation with the permit I can do whatever I want and your needs and your rights have no moment" A place to lay my head Stacey Ryan worked for six years as a plant operator at Condea Vista and LyondellBasell before illness forced him to retire In 2011 he moved his Hurricane Rita-era FEMA trailer to a small plot of land his family still owned near the entrance to the Sasol plant Adjacent land had been sold to Sasol in 2001 along with the shotgun house he grew up in Utilities wont service his trailer the result of a long-running dispute with city officials who rezoned his property "heavy industrial" so Ryan powers it with solar panels and batteries when he can He sleeps in his truck when he cant "Right now Im just trying to maintain a place to lay my head" Ryan said In November the Port of Lake Charles said it would allow Sasol to expropriate 24 parcels of land the company had been unable to acquire through negotiations or whose owners or heirs could not be located Ryans property is among those parcels Residents have until late January to come to an agreement with Sasol After that the Port of Lake Charles will take over negotiations said the ports general counsel Michael Dees It will offer residents the highest of two appraisals for their land; if the offer is refused the port will take the landowner to court Sasol said it has made "good faith efforts to purchase the properties" and that it was "willing to continue negotiations with property owners to avoid expropriation" For now Ryan who rejected a $40000 offer from a local real estate agent for his property is staying put His health continues to deteriorate A chronic diabetic with severe kidney damage who lives on Social Security he began losing his sight
